The living quarters at Blansko’s castle

The Gellhorn family was the last family that used the castle as their permanent residence. Counts of Salm, who bought the castle from Gellhorns, owned the stately home in Rájec, which was their family seat and used Blansko castle only as a summer residence. They accommodated there their friends, acquaintances and office workers of the estate or the ironworks.

During the 19th century, many famous people stayed at the castle, for example Josef Dobrovský (philologist and historian), Karl Ludwig von Reichenbach (chemist, geologist, philosopher and industrialist), Dr. Jindřich Wankel (archeologist), Ferdinand von Saar (writer) or Josef Mánes (painter). Unfortunately, the castle became neglected at the end of the 19th century and then served as an apartment building. Due to its deteriorated state, the Salms tried to sell the castle in the mid-1930s. The castle was rented out until its reconstruction in the 1960s, after which it became the seat of Blansko’s museum. This exposition tries to illustrate the possible look of the flats which were situated on the first floor of the castle at the turn of the 19th and 20th century.
